The officer assaulted has a triple fracture of his cheekbone. Police chiefs and key community figures have agreed that the actions of police officers who arrested a man following an assault in Bristol last week was ‘correct and proportionate’. Further meetings have taken place between police and community leaders following the incident on Friday evening, which saw a teenager assaulted by a baseball bat in a disturbance, and a 30-year-old man was arrested by police. Video footage of the aftermath of that arrest was shared widely on social media, and showed a crowd gathered around the police at the scene. Community leaders, including the mayor Marvin Rees, spent time in the St Pauls area of the city where the incident took place, to talk to local people, and have held a series of meetings with senior police officers to assess what happened, view videos of the incident, including the body-worn cameras carried by the police officers involved…

Bristol Energy Report cost £198,000: City council paid consultants £198K for Bristol Energy report, as Mayor Marvin Rees clashes with opposition during angry meeting. Bristol City Council is to sell the debt-ridden company. Mayor Marvin Rees clashed angrily with opposition councillors over Bristol Energy, as it emerged consultants were paid almost £200,000 for a report recommending its sale. A row erupted during the public forum at a city council cabinet meeting before members went into exempt session where they agreed to sell the debt-ridden company. Insults were hurled and both sides of the political divide pinned the blame on each other for the business’s “failure”. The Labour mayor singled out Tory Cllr Geoff Gollop, who was cabinet lead for finance in 2015 when the decision was made under former mayor George Ferguson to create Bristol Energy. Mr Rees said it was “reprehensible” the Conservative had “totally ignored the part you played in putting this city in this situation”. Cllr Gollop hit back, branding Mr Rees a “dictator”. Bristol Energy has soaked up £36.5million of council taxpayers’ money since it was formed but has posted losses to date of £32.5million. Earlier this year, Bristol City Council commissioned consultants Ernst & Young (EY) to conduct a full assessment of the firm’s structure and future viability. It confirmed on Wednesday (June 3) that it paid the company £198,000 for the report (£165,000 plus VAT) that was discussed behind closed doors because of commercial confidentiality at cabinet the night before, where it was agreed to seek a buyer for the energy business…

Dozens of journalists have been sacked after Microsoft decided to replace them with artificial intelligence software. Staff who maintain the news homepages on Microsoft’s MSN website and its Edge browser – used by millions of Britons every day – have been told that they will be no longer be required because robots can now do their jobs. Around 27 individuals employed by PA Media – formerly the Press Association – were told on Thursday that they would lose their jobs in a month’s time after Microsoft decided to stop employing humans to select, edit and curate news articles on its homepages. Employees were told Microsoft’s decision to end the contract with PA Media was taken at short notice as part of a global shift away from humans in favour of automated updates for news. One staff member who worked on the team said: “I spend all my time reading about how automation and AI is going to take all our jobs, and here I am – AI has taken my job.”..

Covid-19 around in Dec 2019; New coronavirus spread swiftly around world from late 2019, study finds. LONDON (Reuters) – A genetic study of samples from more than 7,500 people infected with COVID-19 suggests the new coronavirus spread quickly around the world after it emerged in China sometime between October and December last year, scientists said on Wednesday. Scientists at University College London’s Genetics Institute found almost 200 recurrent genetic mutations of the new coronavirus – SARS-CoV-2 – which the UCL researchers said showed how it is adapting to its human hosts as it spreads. “Phylogenetic estimates support that the COVID-2 pandemic started sometime around Oct. 6, 2019 to Dec. 11, 2019, which corresponds to the time of the host jump into humans,” the research team, co-led by Francois Balloux, wrote in a study published in the journal Infection, Genetics and Evolution. Balloux said the analysis also found that the virus was and is mutating, as normally happens with viruses, and that a large proportion of the global genetic diversity of the virus causing COVID-19 was found in all of the hardest-hit countries. That suggests SARS-CoV-2 was being transmitted extensively around the world from early on in the epidemic, he said. “All viruses naturally mutate. Examples of TV/Radio media just repeating a press release from Amazon – US local news stations air segments on Amazon penned by company’s PR team

At least 11 stations present story offering ‘glimpse inside’ Amazon, after company apparently sent material to reporters. Nearly a dozen local US TV channels aired segments about Amazon that included footage and a script produced by the retailer’s public relations team. The segments, which, according to the news outlet Courier, appeared on at least 11 local news stations, praised Amazon’s response to the coronavirus pandemic ahead of the company’s shareholder meeting on Wednesday. The meeting takes place following weeks of controversy over the company’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis. Amazon has been accused of denying workers sick leave, failing to provide adequate protection in warehouses, and retaliating against workers who speak out against these conditions. It appears the language and footage in the segment were part of a pre-written story Amazon sent around to some reporters in the US. Zach Rael, a reporter at the Oklahoma City station KOCO, tweeted on Sunday that he had received an email containing footage of Amazon facilities and a script for the news anchor, which included phrases praising Amazon, including: “For the first time, we’re getting a glimpse inside Amazon’s fulfilment centres to see just how the company is keeping its employees safe and healthy.” Courier found at least 11 local news stations had used the Amazon script verbatim, including outlets in West Virginia, Miami, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. A Courier video shows anchors at the stations repeating the same phrases, including “the company is keeping its employees safe and healthy”…

Russian space race: Russian strategic document names strike weapons deployed in space as key military threat – RIA – MOSCOW (Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin approved a strategic document on Tuesday naming the creation and deployment of anti-missile and strike weapons in space as one of the main military threats to Russia, the RIA news agency reported. The document outlining Russia’s policy on its nuclear deterrent was published online amid arms control tensions between Russia and the United States over the future of New START, the last major pact regulating their nuclear arsenals.

Israeli air strikes in Northern Syria: Israeli Airstrikes Pound Northern Syria, Killing at Least Nine – Attack reportedly targeted ‘weapons factory’ – Syrian state media reported an Israeli attack against the northern area around al-Masyaf, with missiles hitting a weapons factory. The attack was said to have caused massive damage, and killed at least nine people. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed this was roughly the case, saying four killed were Syrian and the others are of unknown nationalities. They expected the death toll would rise because of the extent of the damage. As usual, Israel refused to talk, but they did chime in on a 2019 attack on Syria, denying media reports that Israeli ground troops had entered Syria without permission. The incident killed one Syrian civilian. Israel constantly attacks targets in Syria, and generally does try to kill foreigners, labeling them Iranian in most Israeli media outlets. The slain are generally Shi’ites from other countries, but very rarely are they actually from Iran.

The latter was discovered, and actually created, by virologists from the California anti-plague station located near Lake Tulare in the United States. From the name of the latter came the name of an infectious disease, the causative agent of which was bacterium tularensis……  These examples alone are sufficient to state that our people have been the target of one of the largest biological wars in history. But this fact did not embarrass our “allies” – the American partners of the Third Reich. They did not stop financing Nazi projects until the last days of the Great Patriotic War. Some of these funds were spent on the implementation of inhuman biological “experiments”. Thus, none other than the Americans became the sponsors of the Nazi bacteriological warfare. They received almost all Nazi documentation in the field of biological weapons, as well as patents for German inventions. This happened after the surrender of Germany and became the basis for the launch of the American bacteriological program. Its continuation can be observed today in the form of US bio-laboratories. These laboratories scattered around the world are a direct continuation of Nazi projects.

Ambassador Lindstedt accused by Sweden of risking security – Sweden: Ex-ambassador to China Anna Lindstedt is on trial for negotiating with China for release of Swedish bookseller based in Hong Kong – Anna Lindstedt has not spoken publicly but has received the support of 21 ex-ambassadors – For the first time in modern Swedish history, an ex-ambassador has gone on trial and faces a possible jail term. Anna Lindstedt is accused of going beyond her remit by holding unauthorised talks with a foreign power to gain the release of a Chinese-born Swedish citizen. Gui Minhai, a Hong Kong bookseller, was later jailed by China for “illegally providing intelligence overseas”. The prosecutor said Ms Lindstedt had put relations with China at risk. She had acted in violation of Swedish foreign policy by arranging the negotiations, he told the court on Friday. The former ambassador’s defence lawyer told the court in Stockholm she denied the charges…

Former child migrants sent from the UK to Australia by the Fairbridge Society may be a step closer towards receiving compensation for sexual and physical abuse, after the Prince’s Trust said it was providing funds to allow survivors to make claims. Many of an estimated 2,500 child migrants sent to most Australian states by the Fairbridge Society between 1912 and 1970 were sexually abused, as well as regularly beaten…

It threatens to be the biggest investigation into police corruption since the 1970s. The allegations were uncovered by detectives probing claims of historical sex abuse first raised by Labour MP Tom Watson in October 2012. Those on the inquiry, known as Operation Fairbank, are understood to have raised concerns after studying files kept in storage…

In 1949, Parliament clearly intended that members of the Royal family could, if they wished, get married in a civil ceremony.” But others have pointed to a provision of the 1949 Act which says that nothing in it should affect “any law or custom relating to the marriage of members of the Royal Family.” When Princess Margaret wanted to marry a divorced commoner, Group Captain Peter Townsend, 50 years ago, the Lord Chancellor, Lord Kilmuir, advised the Prime Minister that: “Marriages of members of the Royal Family are not in the same position as marriages of other persons. The statutory facilities for civil marriages are not available in England, but are available in Scotland.” Dr Stephen Cretney, emeritus fellow of legal history at Oxford University, said the Prime Minister should issue a “full and proper” statement about the situation. “To put it mildly, the fiasco of the town hall wedding puts in question the competence of some of those on whom the Royal Family, the Government and others relied.” The couple were forced to move the wedding from Windsor Castle, because The Queen would had to have made it available for other couples planning civil marriages. It is also rumoured that the Queen has insisted that Charles cut the guest list for his wedding party. She is also reported to have said that she does not want to meet Mrs Parker Bowles before the wedding, and has insisted that the reception is over at six o’clock “at the latest”.

March 2008 – Camilla police bodyguard Richard Fuller found dead – A POLICE officer who headed the security for Prince Charles’ wife Camilla has been found dead at his home. Sergeant Richard Fuller, 55, was married with three grown-up children. The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles were told of the death while on board the yacht Leander during a Caribbean tour. A spokeswoman for Clarence House said: “The Duchess of Cornwall was very saddened to hear of the death of Sergeant Richard Fuller.” Sgt Fuller, a trained armed response officer with Wiltshire Police, was found dead at his home at Bremhill, near Calne on Sunday…

Highgrove tribute to woman who died after falling into a garden well. Irena Nadiotis worked in Prince Charles’ garden at Highgrove in Gloucestershire. A woman who fell to her death down a 49ft (15m) well in her garden was a “cherished” member of the team at the Prince of Wales’ Highgrove Estate. Irena Nadiotis, 57, was in her own garden in Church Street, Tetbury, on Saturday when the accident happened.
